The Thieves", the first novel by the writer María Victoria Massaro, is the story of two sisters who commit a series of robberies with which, in the author's words, "they take from society what they feel they do not have and claim it back." in the worst way." Manuela and Sarita, the central characters of the novel, are two older women who enter other people's apartments to steal money based on information given to them by Luis, the manager of the building in which they live. A crime triggers the action into a spiral of violence that combines dizzying situations with aggressive dialogues, sexual scenes and family secrets. -How do you define "The Thieves"? -They are stories that connect with each other and have to do with the inner world, literally, because I started writing it during a pandemic. The story shows how characters and situations connect to other people's lives. Chance, things that seem very unexpected but can and do happen. -Like a double game between what happens inside the characters and the inside of a building. Did your experience during confinement influence that choice? -Yes, because the idea arose with a fight between two neighbors in the inner block of the building where I live. That situation, added to the building's chat, with messages that were more hateful than others, made me think about the people behind those messages. Who are they? What they feel? I wondered what happens in a building, what things that you don't see could be happening, what the life of that woman that I don't know could be like, that I don't like how she complains but who has her circumstances, her feelings and her emotions, and handles them that way.
